Moab!

Yes, its true. I've neglected my blog... but for good reason! I've been in Moab! (And... I'll be honest... I didnt really want to come home!) We enjoyed wonderful (80 degree) weather, ate some of the best food, and stayed at an amazing place! It was a much needed get away. Though I didnt shoot much scenery while there, here are a few of my favorites.

Its friday! Hooray! And here in Salt Lake, its a cold, wet, snowy friday. Tomorrow, it will probably be 60 degrees. With snow on Monday. I guess thats just how we roll here. ;)

Anyway... here are today's five. The very random five. :)

Early this morning (5 am to be exact) we caught my 3 year old snacking on Craisins (dried cranberries) and a cupcake. Really? 5 am! And the second my husband found her and asked what she was doing, she burst into tears and was hysterical. It was the strangest thing! Sleep eating?? Um... not sure if that even exists. But it was sure a strange morning at our house!

(I know I posted about this on Facebook, but this is how she insisted on dressing to get her older sister from school yesterday. Oh how I love it.)

Speaking of Facebook... Im on facebook! Come be a fan... becuase Im going to be doing a giveaway in the next few weeks. Im preparing for a local art market in May, and I'd love to give some goodies away here! And of course, to say a big thank you for all your sweet comments! I love you all!

And since we are talking about giveaways, I had to tell you all about last Sunday. Im not so good at being quiet. ;) I took this at one of my favorite beaches on Oahu. Sadly, this is NOT the reason for my lack of posting, though I wish it was. ;) We've just been getting back into the swing of real life. :) Daniel is offically off crutches and the knee brace. His hip joint is almost back in place and gets stronger each day. (he threw it out of place, and it rotated forward, out of socket. I suppose thats what happens when you sit on the couch daily recovering from knee surgery!) And, he was able to go back to work Monday, after being off for 6 weeks. Things are definently looking up. :)

**I also have some exciting mini sessions in the works! (a beautiful field and a blossoming apple tree! more details to come in the following weeks! lets hope it starts to warm up here really soon!)

It was early... (well, as in 9 am early) and I was still under my nice warm down comforter. The house was still quiet, and the morning rush hadnt begun. (and... I was in no hurry to start!) It had been a long week for me. Still caring for my husband on crutches... and trying to finish our hardwood floors. (crash course on home improvement!) It had been a while since I even picked my camera up. And... the times I did... I hated everything I came out with.

This particular morning I tried to think of a way to be creative. I didnt really want to photograph people. I wanted to take my time. To see the light... and perhaps clear my head some.

Then I remembered the cranberries. The ones that were supposed to have been made into salsa a few weeks ago. The cranberries that were beginning to shrivel. The cranberries that would be just perfect.

I took them out... in a little bowl... to a nearby park. I didnt care that I was laying on the ground, camera pointed at the cranberries. I didnt care about the crazy looks from the passers by. I finally felt and captured what I wanted to that day. All with a tiny bowl of cranberries.

My friend Amanda, started Mine on Monday a few weeks ago. And I love it! I have been trying to keep up on a personal blog and this blog. And well... both have been really neglected! :) I especially love being able to take some time out, and blog about these quickly growing kiddos. (which by the way, can you believe that today is FEB 1?)

My mom is an amazing seamstress. She made me all my prom dresses, altered my wedding dress, and made my girls blessing dresses. My girls were really excited when she made these twirly skirts for them last night. They wanted their pictures taken in them- and well, I jumped on that! :)

They twirled... and danced. I loved watching their smiles. And experience the simple joys of childhood through their eyes. :)

five on friday | 10 years...

Okay... trying to get back into the swing of things around here! Our schedule has so off, and before I realize it, another day (or week) has passed! I have some fun stuff in the works though, so stay tuned! :)

A few weeks ago, my friend Chelsey did a post back on the last 10 years. And it really got me thinking. Wow. Its 2010. Already... And that got me thinking about all that has happened during the last decade. And how much my life has changed.

10 years ago...
i was in high school... and skipping morning math class once a week {or more} to go to breakfast with my friends.
life revolved around friends, shopping and having fun.
i thought i had it all planned out.
but i had no idea...

then i learned. i lived. and now... 10 years later...
i have met the man i will share the rest of my life with.
i am a mother.
my photography. a dream... that somehow found me. and i love it.
i no longer think i have life all figured out. because when i think i do, life changes.
treasure each day.
see the beauty.
because we dont know what tomorrow will bring.
and that makes each day precious.

here's to another wonderful 10 years!

and... because i cant post without a photo... here is one from a few weeks ago. my hubby had knee surgery in park city... and because he was still kind of drugged on our drive home... i pulled over, got my car stuck in the snow (thank goodness for 4WHD!) and climbed into knee deep snow drifts to get some shots... this was one of them. :) and... i thought it was kind of fitting anyway... changing of the seasons...

the simple ordinary day.

As some of you may know, my husband recently had knee surgery. (hence the lack of posting...) Initially, we thought it was going to be a quick recovery. He was going to walk out of the hospital... a week off work. But, sometimes life has a way of shaking things up! The repair was more extensive than we thought, and now so is the recovery. I am now becoming a pro at bandage wrapping, brace adjusting, and all other sorts of skills I never knew I had. Well except for patience. Im still working on that. ;) Sometimes its 1 am, and I wonder where my day has gone.

To maintain my sanity, I have been doing one thing. Shooting for me. Each day I challenge myself to see something in the ordinary. Notice something I would have otherwise have skipped over. And in doing so, I have found beauty in the ordinary day.

Now... Im not so sure how beautiful this is. And Im a bit hesitant to post it... But, our sinks have all looked like this before, right? (please tell me Im not the only one who lets the dishes pile up on occasion!)

Grinding wheat for bread... Bread that didnt turn out because I copied the recipe down wrong. :)

Yarn for a darling headband Im making.

Sheet-washing day. The only time it is okay to jump on the bed at our house. The girls love monday. :)

And... shoes. One of my favorite pairs. Target clearance for $7. Happy. :)

year in review... part 2

Another highlight of this year was our trip to Colorado. It was just amazing. It was like a breath of fresh air. Well, except here. At Mt. Evans. 14,000 feet... I would walk 5 feet and be out of breath! But the views were stunning.

As were the wildflowers...

It was here that I first started experimenting with off camera flash. (thanks to my gorgeous cousins!) My first shot...

A few other highlights... Farmers Market

My oldest started kindergarten... (that was hard!!)

Being able to shoot in the Conference Center, and watch the youth of our neighborhood participate in a valley wide celebration for the new temple built in our area.

year in review {part 1}

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! We are all bundled up at home... the snow is falling outside and my girls have declared it 'pajama day'. I've been thinking over the last year... and I cant believe it has gone so quickly. So much has happened and I realized how blessed we've been. Wishing you all the best in 2010! :)

Jan 2009 brought a trip to Oregon. It was a grueling 14 hour drive on snow packed roads. However, the highlight of the whole trip was going to Seaside. We lucked out and had a 60 degree day at the beach! (and that never happens in January on the Oregon Coast!) Here are a few of my favorites...

I snapped this from our car... somewhere in Eastern Idaho.

Taken at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport. (which was just amazing!)

Then some while we were on the beach at Seaside. I especially love these next few... My father in law was diagnosed with Alzheimer's this year. Im so glad that we have these photos. :)

Wednesday again? Really? Wasnt it just Halloween? I know I still have candy around here somewhere.

Christmas is just 10 days away! I've been busy being Santa's helper this year. I took on one too many projects (but I love it that way) and now Im furiously working and hoping I'll be done before Christmas.

I love this time of year... there's just something magical about Christmas time. The feeling is almost tangible. I hope you all are having a wonderful holiday season!

wordless wednesday | superhero - a day late.

Project: Home

So... I was thinking one day. (My dad will be shocked. ;) just kidding. Love you dad!) Anyway... I was thinking about home. I wanted to do a project. I wanted to shoot for me. No rules. To shoot my interpretation of 'home'.

Im a born 'n raised Salt Lake City girl. And quite honestly, I love to travel. Love the white sand beaches of Hawaii. I love the sights and sounds (oh... and did I mention the food? *drool*) of New York. I remember coming home from my first NY trip. I stepped off the curb at the SLC airport. And I was hit by silence. It was so different from the place I was only 5 hours prior.

So... its my little project to photograph home. Im starting with one of my favorite things: Salt Lake City Farmer's Market. They hold it every June-October in a huge park downtown. There is live music, fresh farm grown produce, talented artists and crafters from all over the state selling their goods. Its a wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning! I love buying fresh produce. Mmmm... there's nothing like fresh strawberries and peaches!

ps... these were all inspired by this old photograph my grandma gave me. Its not a great scan, and I wish you could see the real photo. But you get the idea right?? ;)

Five on Friday | the random edition...

So. This Five on Friday... I first read about it on Chelsey's blog probably about... ohhh... 2 months ago. And every friday I intended to post. Really. And then I needed to fold laundry. Or, tame the downpour that so happened to be under our sink. Then after three million other excuses (that you probably dont want to know about) I decided to join in too.

So... here it goes. :)

1. Do you read Nie? She is like a breath of fresh air. And after her accident, and the challenges she contiunes to face- wow- what an inspiration she is! Well... a while ago, she talked about the Sweet Tooth Fairy. A cupcake shop in Provo. I was down there recently, and I just had to stop in. Just to see what it was about. Is there anything better than a va-NIE-lla cupcake? I think not. In fact, for a minute, I thought I was in heaven. Its that good. :)

2. Cleaning the kids' playroom. I think I disappeared for a few days there. But, I made it back in one peice. Thankfully.

3. The cold. Im learning to embrace it. Well, as much as I possibly can. I even took Amy outside. We lasted about 10 minutes before calling it quits, and coming upstairs for a cup of hot cider. But I did get this shot. *sigh... it makes me actually like winter. Just a little bit.

4. Anthropologie. Oh, Anthropologie. I love you. And I find way too much that I like. Like the $6,000 couch.

5. To-do lists. I make one every single day. Im lucky if I cross off one or two things. Then... I forget I have one. And I get sidetracked... So I try again the next day.

I was 14 years old. It was a warm early summer day. I sat at a table in my next door neighbor's backyard. We were in our 4-H painting class. I remember our little art lesson... (well, it was kind of like Charlie Brown- that teacher... waa-wahh-wahh) I was too distracted. Laundry was hanging on the line to dry, the sound of water from an old moss-covered fountain, the old gazebo with its white paint chipping away, and the grape vines that covered the old fence that bordered my yard from my neighbor's. I remember watching my best friend start painting on her canvas. And I sat there. Wanting to paint the sunshine.

It wasnt until recently that I learned to capture what inspired me. I still cant paint,(well... come on, stick people are pretty cool right??) and I still get distracted on warm summer days. But I am finally becoming me. And being me feels pretty good. :)

What a wonderful year! I think back on this year- and one of the things Im so grateful for is you! All the wonderful people I have met along the way. You have inspired me, your encouraging comments, words... things that may seem small and insignificant- really mean so much to me!

As Im typing this, I glance at the clock. 1:15 am, November 16. November. Where has this year gone? Glancing back- it seems like such a whirlwind. Days, weeks, months- flying by at an ever quickening pace. But even more, I remember giggles, laughter, jumping on the bed with my girls, and kissing boo-boo's better.

Quite a few of my friends on Facebook have been posting what they are thankful for each day. And today, Im grateful for the things money cant buy. True friends, family, and enthusiastic hugs from a little three year old.

Meet one of my best friends, Jennie and her cute family. We were laughing the whole time. I mean, rolling on the floor, gut wrenching laughing. It was a good reminder to THINK before I speak... because sometimes you just dont realize how things can come out the WRONG way!! ;)

Lately, I have been thinking about the many ways I have been blessed. The first thing that comes to mind is my wonderful family and friends. Friends here locally, and even friends I have made through photography that live all over the world. You all have influenced me, encouraged me, and touched my life in ways you may not realize. Wordless Wednesday {fall}

I went to Moab this weekend... it was such a nice little get away. It amazing to me that in a four hour drive, the scenery can change so dramatically. Best of all, its warm, and hardly ever snows. Thats almost enough to entice me to move there! :)

I went through Arches National Park today. It was incredible. It had been about six years since I'd been there... I had hiked Delicate Arch then. I thought I couldnt make it. (let it be known that the park map says its a 'strenuous hike') Just as I thought I'd just hang back, my 76 year old grandma passed me on the trail... There was no way she was going to beat me up the trail. ;) And it was worth it. This time, I had 2 kiddos in tow. It was fun to share the beauty of Moab with them.

Some highlights:
-Eating way too many smores/burgers/fries/pizza...
-seeing shooting stars/milky way
-finding a vintage apron pattern book
-and the best of all... not ONE 'are we there yet?'

What a fun family! They had me laughing nearly the whole time! Dad was so cute and did a great job getting the clothes picked out, the kids were making eachother laugh (by standing behind me and doing... well... Im still not quite sure what! Maybe I dont want to know- lol...) And I even found out that the oldest boy goes to the same junior high I did... and the some of the same teachers are still there!

It was wonderful spending the afternoon with you all. :) Enjoy!

Meet the {V} family! I just love them! This is my third time doing pictures for them. I love being around them. Their kiddos are so much fun- and not to mention- photogenic. And- I love seeing how sweet they are to eachother.

I spent a fun night downtown with the D family. They were up for anything... even hiking up a mountain in 45 degree weather! What troopers! :)

I LOVE fall!! Even if it is wild here. These were shot on Tuesday. It was a beautiful 88 degrees. Next day: 45 and SNOW. Yep... thats why I love Utah! :) Here's just a few shots of being up in the canyon.

Love taking pics of the kiddos... but you probably knew that already. I always want shots like this...

but in reality... things go more like this:

then... after a while, I decide to shoot something that wont require me to a) give them candy OR WORSE... ask for a trip to the toy store because, "We've been sooo good..." hmmmm... I think that statement needs parental attention. asap.

And last of all... the drive home. Shot this from my seat. I love the last minutes of sunlight. There's just something beautiful about those last fleeting bits of daylight. :)

hanging on to summer...

Can it please just stay forever? I could handle this weather all year long! And my favorite thing about summer: the fields. I {{love}} fields. They remind me of where i grew up. Running through fields with grass taller than me, secret hide-outs, and the sticky thorns that came with it all. :) So naturally, one of my favorite places to shoot is a good 'ol field.

Meet my darling friend Erin. She has just about three weeks left! And isnt she just beautiful? We shot these at 8:30 in the morning! (I dont think that i've really seen the sun at that hour... at least not for quite some time! lol)

The next day, I thought it would be great to get some pictures of my girls in the field. (I dont order the pictures through the school, but I did want to have something printed so that we could give to relatives...) I (mistakenly) thought that things were going well... The girls found the apple tree, and pulled some apples off... After a few bites... they discovered a worm. It was all over. The girls retreated to the car.

Luckily... My friend Tana came with us (and her kiddos)... so I was able to get a few shots!

And... last of all... since Tana is a photographer too, she snapped a few of me. Its SO different being in FRONT of the camera! :)

I SO love the end of summer! I love the sunflowers that seem to pepper the fields... It almost looks like a sea of yellow. But it doesnt last too long! So- great idea- lets get some pictures of the kiddos out there! My friend, Karina and I had been planning this for a few weeks. After 2 reschedules- we finally made it out. Well- after hauling furniture and dodging {many} pokey weeds we finally found a little area that would do. Only to have the sun slip below the mountian a few seconds later. After a series of bathroom accidents, dodging pokey weeds... we managed to pull a few off!

just got back from learning how to shoot at night with the uber talented dustin izatt! what an incredible time!!! i cant believe how much i learned- and it only confirmed how much i love flash and other fun methods of lighting. this was my first time shooting at night, and i just love it. i felt like a sponge and soaked up every bit. (even though i may be a slow-absorbing sponge at times!) here are just a few...

Last night, a few of my photography friends met downtown - our model was sweet Rachael who is getting married in just a few short weeks. She is such a beautiful bride! We all had a great time, met new friends (as you will see below), and... the photographers even got their turn in front of the camera.

Does five years really have to go by so fast? The sleepless nights I thought would never end are all just a faint memory- as are those chubby cheeks, legs and arms... I guess that's why I love photography. Its my way of preserving that moment. Because with each passing day, she becomes more independent, more of her own little person. And I love her for it.

i {heart} vacations

We just returned back from a wonderful vacation in Colorado. It was my first time there (that I could really remember, or appreciate!) and it was SO much fun! We even went up Mt. Evans... and the elevation was 14,100 feet. I thought I was going to pass out. Thats almost triple my elevation at home. I was blown away at how beautiful Colorado was. (I guess I thought it would be similar to Utah...)

And one of the best parts of all... was taking pictures of these beautiful girls! (who I am lucky enough to call my cousins!) Thanks girls!

Seriously- what a beautiful family! And little Tate- he is a cutie! (even if he didnt want to have anything to do with me! lol) We tried getting his attention- and you know what his favorite thing to look for was? Bugs. Yep, bugs. SO cute!! Having only girls, I forget that there are those out there that think bugs are cool. (and no screaming when a fly buzzes past...) ;) Here are a few of my favs. :)

I've known (and been good friends with) Ryan and Malissa since high school. We've had some really fun times together, so I was really excited to do their pictures! (not to mention- look at how photogenic they are!) We had all sorts of fun trying out different things... keeping kiddos happy- and being eaten ALIVE by mosquitos! I was in LOVE with Malissa's shoes. You can never have a bad day when you are wearing red heels! :)

Recently, I was asked to be a photographer and capture our stake's part in celebrating the dedication of the Oquirrh Mountain Temple. Youth from around the valley participated in this event... Here are some pictures from the rehersal in the conference center- it was so awesome!

And um... yes... I was the one that tripped down the stairs. In front of everyone. Its was definitely one of my more finer moments. ;)

Im so excited about this new blog! For me, this blog will be a documentation of the journey. Its always humbling to look back- to see how far you've come- and the wonderful people you meet along the way. A photo... its about that moment- because you never really know what life has in store for you next- and thats what makes life exciting!
